Description ThinkPad 760XL Features
Processor (166MMX)
These systems have a 166MHz Pentium processor with L2 cache and MMX
technology.
Memory (48mb RAM)
The ThinkPad 760XL systems are designed to use non-parity, 144-pin, 64-bit EDO SO
DIMM memory. 48mb of system memory (RAM) is standard, and can be expanded up
to 104MB. Two internal slots are provided for the Memory Modules in the memory
module adapter that is located under the hard disk drive. One or two 144 pin, 64 bit
Memory Module(s)-(Memory Module = Extended Data Out, Small Outline Dual Inline
Memory Module) of 3.3 volt, non-parity technology can be installed in the system for
memory expansion.
Storage Devices (2.1G HDD, 1.44FDD, 20xCD-ROM)
The customer-installable hard drive is 2.1GB standard. The drive is easily removed by
lifting up the keyboard. A 1.44MB FDD comes standard. The ThinkPad UltraBay, also
standard with the system, is an intelligent bay that switches its pinout signals to allow
the installation of an FDD, second battery (Li-Ion or NiMH), HDD, or CD-ROM in
what would normally be just the FDD bay. The installation of a second HDD requires
the ThinkPad Second HDD Adapter optional
feature. All of these systems are capable of using a CD-ROM option and all available
hard disk drive options. A port is provided on the system to plug the Floppy disk drive
(FDD) into when the FDD External Attachment Kit (P/N 66G3618) is used. The CD-ROM and the hard disk
drive (HDD) must be installed inside the system unit.
3.5-inch, 1.44 MB floppy diskette drive
2.5-inch, 2.1GB hard disk drive is standard.
20xCD Rom
Formatted Capacity(1): 2100 MB(2) or 2.1GB(2)
Bus Interface: ATA

LCD Display (12.1"TFT)
These systems come with a large 12.1-inch (measured diagonally), 800 X 600
resolution, TFT LCD display. This display provides superior viewing capability and
helps lessen the glare indoors. The 12.1-inch screen provides 35% more viewing area
when compared to a 10.4-inch screen. The 800x600 resolution TFT LCD display will
display 256 colors.

Video
The ThinkPad 760XL systems have PCI local bus support providing exceptional video
performance.
Keyboard and TrackPoint III (84 key keyboard)
The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that
allows you to quickly access system functions such as power management control. The
keyboard tilts to a comfortable angle for typing when the system is opened and there is
a palm-rest area. If desired, you can adjust the keyboard to have no tilt. The keyboard
lifts up allowing access to the floppy disk drive (FDD) bay, HDD bay, CD-ROM, and
battery for quick upgrades or battery changes in the ThinkPad UltraBay(TM). The
TrackPoint III has accurate pointing capability and the "drag-and-drop" function of the
click buttons is helpful. You can lock and hold the buttons in without continuously
pushing on them.
84 key keyboard with imbedded numeric keypad and integrated TrackPoint(TM)III
which emulates all the mouse functions. It sits between the "G" and "H" keys.
85 key keyboard with imbedded numeric keypad and integrated TrackPoint(TM)III.
The keyboard has a "Fn key" which is a special key and is located in the lower
left corner. The Fn key allows the user to instantly activate the following operational
features by pressing the Fn key and a designated function key:
Battery power status display
Standby/Suspend/Hibernation
LCD variables
PCI Bus (32-bit)
The PCI bus supports 32-bit transfers for faster performance.
PCMCIA (2 PCMCIA SLOTS)
The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC
card or the new PCMCIA CardBus(4) devices.
Audio (Sound Blaster Pro-Compatible)
The system is equipped with jacks for external stereo speakers or headphone and
external microphone. A separate slide-volume control is located to the rear of the
keyboard on the system.
Infrared
The system has IR transceivers in front and back for wireless file and data transfer and
printing. The ThinkPad 760XL is designed for compliance with the Infrared Data
Association (IrDA) IR data link specification Version 1.0. The system supports three
modes of operation:
IBM mode (from 576 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps)
HP mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps)
Sharp mode (9600 bps)
Other Features
The system has the full complement of ports (enhanced parallel port, SVGA (external
display), pointer-keyboard-keypad, serial). In addition, a 240-pin connector supports the
following IBM docking solutions:
Dock I -- portable docking with a slot and bay
Dock II -- desktop docking with slots, bays, and PCMCIA slots
Port Replicator I -- cable manager with a Type III PCMCIA slot or Type II PCMCIA
slots
Port Replicator II -- cable manager only
IBM SelectaDock Base Model 1
IBM SelectaDock I
IBM SelectaDock II
When these systems are used with the ThinkPad Dock I or II, the ThinkPad IDE
Conversion Card option (46H5994) is required to access the IDE devices in these
docking solutions.
All of these systems are capable of using a CD-ROM option and all available hard disk
drive options. A port is provided on the system to plug the FDD into when the optional
FDD External Attachment Kit (66G3618) is used. The CD-ROM and the HDD must be
installed inside the system unit.
Product Positioning
The ThinkPad 760XL notebook computer provides the ultimate in overall system
performance, configuration flexibility, and product consistency to optimize individual
effectiveness and maximize investment return.
External Interface
The external input device port can have the following devices connected:
IBM PS/2 Miniature Mouse
IBM PS/2 Numeric Keypad
IBM PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse
The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector is required when:
Attaching an external keyboard
Attaching an external keyboard and mouse
Serial Connector (RS-232D) -- Serial device port for connecting serial devices such as
an external Modem.
Enhanced Parallel Connector -- Enhanced Parallel device port for connecting devices
such as printers.
Infrared sensors -- Provides a wireless connection to devices, such as other notebook
and desk top Personal Computers, via IR, that are equipped with the IBM, Hewlett
Packard, or Sharp IR transceiver. The 760XL has been designed for compliance with
the IrDA (Infrared Data Association) data link specification version 1.0 for IRLMP,
IRLAP, and IR physical signaling. Uses include transferring files, etc. The system
supports three modes of operation: IBM mode (from 576 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps) HP mode
(from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps) Sharp mode (9600 bps)
Stereo audio jacks -- Provides for the connection of external stereo
speakers/headphones and microphone on the 760XL.
External Display Connector -- External display port for connecting one of the supported
VGA or SVGA displays that may be used in desktop environment instead of the LCD
that is standard with the system. Also supporting an attachment of ISO 9241-3 enabled
IBM monitors. It provides 75 Hz refresh rate and "flicker-free" display clarity. Dual
Display of LCD and an external display is also supported.
PCMCIA slot -- The IBM ThinkPad 760XL new models systems, conforms to the
PCMCIA Standard 95. Other PCMCIA adapters that comply with this standard may
also function, but have not been tested by IBM.
AC Adapter
The AC adapter is an alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) converter to
supply the necessary power to the computer. The AC adapter also charges the battery
pack when it is installed in the computer. PC Cards which do not support the power
management function may cause the shorter battery operation
hours.
STANDARD BATTERY
The Li-Ion Battery Pack is standard feature for the 760XL.
